I remember setting the dining room table every time we ate at my grandmother’s house. It was mandatory to place the glass, forks, knives, and napkins in a particular way. She checked behind me to see if it was done correctly and if it wasn’t she gave me instructions on how to fix the mistake. Little did I know she was preparing me for my career as an event planner. Believe it or not there really is a formal and informal way to display a place setting.  Keep in mind that these vary and get more complex depending on what is being served.
